Procurement is undergoing significant change at almost every level as it has matured at a growing pace in recent years. And this change is manifesting itself structurally, technically and operationally as well as strategically and capability wise.
Many have embraced this natural change and run ‘transformation’ projects – often hitched to IT change projects or major new system implementations and often entwined with procurement process reviews to drive greater efficiency, user service levels and compliance. Indeed, some procurement teams are now on their second or even third transformation projects.
The Covid pandemic has, in many ways, simply accelerated this evolution.
- Working from home has accelerated the breakdown of paper processes upon which procurement was built.
- A new focus on the supply side has also brought new questions for procurement from the C suite – some not directly answerable despite past investments in supply side technology.
- Working remotely requires better and more practical technology.
- New mandatory requirements bring greater intolerance for risk, and higher compliance needs – further eroding service levels for operational users
- Supply side risk reviews have rebalanced risk -v- cost for inbound supply chains, demanded greater security of supply and also enabled greater compliance by inbound supply chains
Procurement was a star in the early days of the pandemic during 2020 – cynical stakeholders suddenly saw procurement as entirely aligned with true business needs, demonstrating a real sense of urgency and proactively finding proactive short-cuts to getting things done quickly. And they liked it.
Yet, today, in 2021, there is still a sense that procurement as not yet grasped this great opportunity. The heightened profile and criticality that Covid brought procurement, not yet rewarding procurement with greater recognition or a more proactive role in many organisations.
In all likelihood, in most organisations, procurement still have more work to do. With more still to change to achieve lasting alignment with true business needs, strategic proactivity and that fine balance between high customer service and governance needs that weigh risk for the organisation. A challenge that procurement needs to embrace now.
Many business leaders see these changes as essential of the development of the procurement function providing procurement leaders with the platform to transform their team into a function that is more strategically aligned and can better balance customer and company needs.

The key forces driving procurement post-Covid – capturing
Transformation to capture the opportunity of Procurement’s latent potential
Event welcome and housekeeping
The world as we know it has changed drastically, and Procurement functions need to evolve as well. As businesses recover from the pandemic, Procurement has a critical role to play, not just in restoring and growing profitability, but also in supporting the broader business strategy. With the world facing increased volatility and uncertainty, major geopolitical shifts, technological disruptions, changing societal expectations, and fundamental changes in how people work, its time for Procurement to step up, and lead the transformation that is needed.
There are five key themes that are shaping the procurement transformations of the future:
1. Shifting beyond cost-reduction to creating a source of sustainable competitive advantage
2. Investing in partnerships with suppliers to drive innovation
3. Creating an effective, resilient and sustainable supply chain
4. Accelerating adoption of digital and analytics to unlock new sources of value
5. Building new capabilities and a future-ready operating model
Unprecedented business disruption has forced procurement organizations to refocus on supporting critical business operations and supplier relationships, resulting in a pivot toward both spend cost reduction and supply assurance.
In this session, attendees will gain deeper insight into procurement’s new key priorities in 2021 including critical skills and capabilities, how the pandemic has shaped this year’s international procurement agenda and other results from Hackett’s brand new 2021 Procurement Key Issues Study conducted globally in Q1 2021 with hundreds of top CPOs around the world.
With limited resources and largely manual processes, many enterprises struggle to get on top of issues including cost blowout on contracts, non-compliant supplier performance, maverick spend and missed opportunities… a perfect storm for auditing.
Integrated technology-driven process and configured data management can free up your resources to not only get on top of these issues, but to also engage in high value activities that align with procurement strategy, including proactive supplier relationship management, category spend optimisation and contract performance management.
In this presentation, Warren Shaw – Director of Client Engagement at Open Windows Software, will provide practical tips for streamlining, integrating and leveraging technology-driven process and data management within your procurement function – and driving procurement transformation in the process.

What is digital transformation mean anyway? How do I successfully facilitate change? How can I sway the naysayers?
Australian businesses are spending gazillions of dollars on implementing new technologies. Often they don’t get a good return on their investments. Because soon enough, people revert to old ways of doing things, and company performance doesn’t improve. To reduce the chance of your transformation efforts failing, leadership and a radically inclusive approach is critical.
This is not a theoretical exercise about change management. This is about sharing real industry examples, success factors, challenges, and tips to help you successfully deliver lasting results and build your brand as a procurement leader.

Suppliers are in apposition to observe keenly how well we do in the marketplace – seeing the best and worst of our efforts.
Especially those suppliers baptised through the fire of tendering …
How might Procurement change for the better in the way they interact through tenders and go-to-market sourcing processes? What are GOOD and BAD examples of our current practices and what does this suggest for our future challenges?
The opportunity is now for procurement to start transforming into a competitive advantage. This pandemic thrusted a heightened profile onto procurement, and the best procurement functions are maintaining this newfound stardom and becoming a true competitive advantage for their organisations. Strong connection to the end customer’s needs, understanding the value of security of supply, and rapid decision making are all features of the post-pandemic leading procurement functions. The next evolution of procurement is transformation and the time is now for procurement to stop being transformed and start transforming. Andrew will take you on a journey through the latest procurement transformations which he has delivered as both a procurement and transformation leader, and now as a consultant to both SME and large businesses.
In response to the pandemic, organisations globally doubled down on technology investments. Seven in 10 boards of directors have accelerated their digital business initiatives in the wake of COVID-19 disruption. With such large investments being made in technology, chief procurement officers will be expected to ensure those investments help the function realize a strong ROI in the future. But how are the best procurement functions are tailoring their support to the recovery journey and beyond in future to maximise returns on accelerating digital investments
Do we have the capability to match our ambition in procurement? Historically, research shows us that we underinvest in both the recruitment of TALENT into procurement and the DEVELOPMENT of it though training. What skills will we need in future and how can we best close the gap between strategy and capability in future?
How to transform to better manage cost through an entreprenurial approach on both FIXED cost and OPEX to affect the P&L and change the business model post-acquisition.
